Personal papers of Elise Stern Haas. Includes letters from composer Ernest Bloch, the Bloch family, and correspondence relating to the establishment of the Ernest Bloch Professorship at the University of California. Performance materials include programs, reviews, and articles about Ernest Bloch. It also includes pictures of the premiere performance of Bloch's Sacred Service at the Temple Emanu'el. There is an autograph manuscript of Darius Milhaud's Adam.

Milhaud was born in Aix-en-Provence on September 4, 1892. As a child he improvised melodies at the piano and soon took up the violin. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1909, studying the violin with Berthelier, ensemble with Lefèvre, harmony with Leroux, counterpoint with André Gédalge, composition and fugue with Charles-Marie Widor, and conducting with Vincent d'Indy. Elise Stern Haas was born in San Francisco on Oct. 29, 1893, the only child of Rosalie Meyer and Sigmund Stern. Her father was president of Levi Strauss and Co., and nephew of Levi Strauss, who founded the firm in 1850. In 1914, she married Walter A. Haas, president of Levi Strauss and Co. from 1928 to 1955. Composer, violinist, conductor, and photographer Ernest Bloch was born on July 24, 1880, in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1894 he began the study of music theory and composition with Emile Jacques-Dalcroze at the Geneva Conservatory of Music, who advised him to continue violin instruction under Louis Etienne-Reyer at the same institution.
